Solange Machado added that women play a fundamental role within the family and has been setting firm steps and conquering a major space of intervention in the affairs of their countries and of the world.

The official stated that with the emergence of independence of the countries and ending of the apartheid regime in South Africa, women have been, thanks to their struggle, scoring progresses in the domains of human rights, observation and monitoring of elections and a

greater role in education.

This, she added, has led the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon, into appointing a special under-secretary for gender equality and progress of women.

The PAWO is a female organisation gathering all countries of the continent. It has its headquarters in Angola since 1988.
